Scammers are targeting families and individuals waiting for the government’s £150 council tax rebate. This has led local authorities to warn households over the cold-call scammers, who are trying to benefit from the financial worries of others. 

The local government association (LGA) has stated that if you receive an unexpected text, phone call or email that asks for personal information in exchange for payment, you should ensure it is genuine by contacting your local council. The scam results in individuals seeing a large chunk of money being taken out of their accounts once they have handed over their personal information. Therefore, be wary to who you give your details.

Councillor Mohan Iyengar, VC of LGA, has said: Councils are working hard to ensure eligible residents receive their energy rebate payments as soon as possible. However, criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to take advantage of the financial worries people face. As a result, many of these scams look legitimate on first impression.

If you believe you have been scammed, you should report the scam to Action Fraud – or ring them on 03001232040 –  as soon as possible. You should also contact your bank to ensure your account is safe. You can also report suspicious numbers to your mobile provider and your local council.
