The ICAEW is introducing changes to the ACA in September 2025, designed to streamline the curriculum, provide enhanced resources for developing digital skills and allow apprentices to specialise earlier in their careers.
But how will these changes impact accountancy apprenticeships?
What’s changing?
Alongside the core components of accountancy modules and work experience, apprentices will also benefit from a new third component: a specialised learning and development programme.
Giving students a chance to develop their skills further, the changes seek to strengthen students’ skills in ethics, sustainability and technology, prepare them for future workplace shifts, boost specialised knowledge through flexible learning options and provide enhanced support through an overhauled learning journey.
Why are the changes happening?
Like many other industries, accounting has been through a lot of changes in recent years. The ICAEW has stated that the Next Generation ACA will therefore ensure that apprentices are ‘ready for tomorrow’s world’.
What can apprentices expect?
The ICAEW has revealed the key features of the new curriculum:
Ethics
Focusing on essential ethical principles, the Next Generation ACA will refine apprentices’ decision-making skills for their professional roles. By studying real-world case studies, apprentices will gain insight into practical ethical dilemmas, preparing them for challenges they’ll face in the workplace.
Sustainability
As businesses face growing pressure to address environmental and social impacts, sustainability will be fully integrated into the Next Generation ACA. This will equip apprentices to understand and report on environmental impacts, reflecting the evolving role of accountants in promoting sustainability.
Technology
With AI becoming increasingly central to accountancy, apprentices will be required to develop strong digital skills. Technology will be embedded across all modules, underscoring its critical role in modern accounting practices.
